Varna

Pearl of the Bulgarian Riviera

  Varna City Centre & Flats

Varna is the pearl of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It is the second city after the capital Sofia, located on the famous Varnenski Gulf known since the antiquity. The place was inhabited since the prehistoric period and there are signs of a Thracian village. The city was created by the ancient Greeks who founded in the VI century BC a colony named Odessos. The colony was rich with flourishing  commerce  and crafts.

Under the Romans, the city plan and canalization were improved. The following Byzantine rulers also maintained the city as an important fortress on the Black Sea coast.

During the VI century DC the city was ruined by the Avares invasions, tribes coming from the North.

After the destruction, at  the location of  ancient Odessos appeared a new city wearing a new name- Varna.

During  the Middle Ages Varna became an important port city visited by the ships of City-States such as Venice, Genoa or Dubrovnik. The commercial importance of Varna remained strong under the Turkish yoke as well. The Turks made it an important military center.

Nowadays, Varna is known especially as a tourist center with its Sea Garden and wide, yellow sand beach. In the surroundings there are many resorts, including Golden Sands and St Constantine, known worldwide. The city is a big cultural center with an Opera House, theater, different museums and universities. During the Summer there’s a famous Ballet dance festival and  the “Varna’s Summer” movie festival.
